FFF: “New Calm” + 1

Ought

Friday’s Free Feature (FFF) comes from Montreal’s Ought. The band is set to release its debut full-length LP in April 2014 on Constellation. In 2012, Ought released the EP, New Calm, which they tag as “post-haste, post-rock.” Actually, New Calm plays like harder Radiohead without the concern for perfection.

Drawing from many influences (punk, reggae, post-rock, progressive) New Calm is not sleek, but frayed at the edges. Its unkempt production is very much part of its appeal. One can easily envision being in a dark club room full of dry ice steam and lights, as Ought wails through their diverse set of recordings.
