The Obligatory Best of 2013 post

Well… 2013 is kaputski, and frankly, I am reluctant to put together a “best of” post. There will be no top 10, but just a random listing of stuff that kept me happy all year.

Parquet CourtsLight Up Gold
I wish I saw this band live. Post punk music had its fair representation in 2013.

–A big thumbs up to KEXP for posting this performance from Mellow Johnny’s Bike Shop in Austin, TX.

Julia HolterLoud City Song
Imaginative, intelligent and challenging, I kept returning to this album because of its depth and complexity. It might be my favorite of the year.

“In the Green Wild”

Foxygen – We Are the 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace & Magic
Dylan’s mid-sixties crisis is all over this album, but it’s entirely original and imaginative. If Loud City Song is numero uno, this is a close second.

“No Destruction”

Norwegian Arms – “Wolf Like Stray Dog”
I was really lucky to see this band live last spring, and I hope to see them again soon.  They put on a super hot show. It’s nice to see good guys get a break. This album is full of rhythm and bounce. Shake your ass and get into it!

“At the Formerly British Council Supported English Centre”

Honorable mention: Arcade Fire – “Reflektor”; Bill Callahan – “Dream River”; Mikal Cronin – “MCII”; Phosphorescent – “Muchacho”; Sky Ferreira – “Night Time, My Time”; Vampire Weekend – “Modern Vampires of the City”; Valerie June – “Pushing Against A Stone”; Atoms for Peace – “Amok”; and Laura Marling – “Once I Was An Eagle”.

That’s about right. Cheers…
