The Morning Mail: 27-March-13

Some sounds to consider from the inbox…

Umlomo – “#60” (free download)
Single, self release
#60 is full of fuzzy careening guitars; it’s about finding the motivation to get up and get through the day (and life).  Umlomo was part of the South African band The City Is The Desert (In Disguise). A series of life changes and turns have him living in London. Umlomo is releasing a recording a week. These are all DIY-Bedroom type recordings, that are impeccably recorded and mixed. The project is much cathartic as anything else. Umlomo just wants the music to be heard, and it should be. Check out other recordings on SoundCloud.

This is Head – “Time’s An Ocean”
from The Album ID
out March 27 on Adrian Recordings
Malmö psych pop quartet This Is Head sounds a bit like a spacey U2 on “Time’s An Ocean”, the first single from The Album ID.

Shark? – “California Girls” [free download]
from Savior
out Summer 2013 on Old Flame Records
I really loved seeing this band live last fall and this new single just makes me love them even more. There’s a punchy punk feel with a smidge of surf guitar that pairs nicely with the song’s overwhelming sentiment.

Pick A Piper
“Cinders and Dust” and “Lucid in Fjords” (feat. Ryan McPhun from Ruby Suns)

from Pick A Piper
out 2 April 2013 on Mint
Pick A Piper  is an organic/electronic project produced by Caribou drummer Brad Weber with Angus Fraser and Dan Roberts. “Cinders and Dust” and “Lucid in Fjords” are from their self-titled, debut record. It features guest vocals from bands like Born Ruffians, Braids, Ruby Suns and Enon. “Cinders and Dust” is dreamy, ethereal electronic dance material, while “Lucid in Fjords” is a bit more emotive electropop. These two are worth multiple replays.
