Afternoon Edition: 11-Feb-13

Deplorable behavior on our part, leaving the blog hanging out there with no posts for several days. It’s hard when each of us gets busy. Nice of you folks to keep checking back.

The Scream

Thee Oh Sees – “Minotaur” [mp3]
from Floating Coffin
out 16 April on Castle Face Records
On “Minotaur” we find John Dwyer channeling his inner Black Francis for imagery. More lethargic and dark than punk, the strings add to the melancholy of this song.

The Ocean Blue – “Blow My Mind”
from Ultramarine
out 19 March on Korda Records
The Ocean Blue excel at creating breezy, dreamy jangle pop, and “Blow My Mind” continue this trend. This band goes back to my college days when I purchased their self-titled release in 1989. You can imagine I am awash with nostalgia, and a bit amused that David Schelzel and I own the same guitar. Check out the video on Paste.

Laurelin Kruse – “Jupiter” (free download)
from Winter in Mind
released 1 January 2013 on Bandcamp
Laurelin Kruse is a self-described ‘Colorado Girl stuck in Brooklyn’ and “Jupiter” is about how she is always trying to get back home. There’s an eerie, enchanting melancholy to this song with it’s deliberate guitar playing and big sky at night feel. The EP, Winter in Mind, was written in late 2011, recorded in early 2012, and finally mastered in September 2012. It’s a delightful set of six songs that mixes the dream pop, folk, and country and western genres. Stream and pick up the entire EP on Bandcamp.
