The Morning Mail: 11-Oct-12

Thursday brings sights and sounds from Black Lizard, Hey Sholay, Benjamin Francis Leftwich, Lois & the Love, Sleeper Agent, and Yes Cadets.

Listen:

Black Lizard – “Dead Light”
Single
Neo-psychedelic/protopunk band from Helsinki just signed with Soliti Records. This is gritty stuff with a self described “Spector backbeat.” Stream their debut EP here and buy it here.

Benjamin Francis Leftwich – “In the Open”
from In the Open (EP)
out November 19 on Dirty Hit Records
Leftwich returns with some subtle changes, a fuller sound and building off his nu-folk foundation. He’s also released a covers EP that you get for the price of an email address.

Lois & the Love
“Rabbit Hole” b/w “Dark Serenade” 7″
out November 19 on Normal Recordings Ltd
“Rabbit Hole” is a raw screamer, like Heart with their asses on fire. It’s loud and in your face. “Dark Serenade” is exactly that. Lois Winstone has a great set of pipes and she’s not afraid to use them. Each track is marked by great energy and a vintage rock feel.

“Dark Serenade”

Yes Cadets – “Le Mans”
from Le Mans (EP)
out now (Oct. 8) on Hummingbird Records
Snappy indie pop track, bounces around at a nice clip, and the male lead/female backing is a nice accent. See the video for “Seconds In A Minute” below. They are playing all over Europe these next two months. Check out their tour dates here.

Watch:

Hey Sholay – “My Blood”
from ((O))
out now on Fierce Panda
Is it modern power pop? I don’t know, but I dig it… The video is a bit different, a nice walk around London. Hey UK folks! Later today (4 PM, GMT) Hey Sholay, will perform a rather special acoustic version of a track from their new album ((O)) with Steve Lamacq and his 6Music team as part of BBC5Live’s Octoberfest.

Sleeper Agent – “That’s My Baby”
from Celebrasion
out now on Mom + Pop Music
There’s not a lacquer and polish on this video, and I like that. Recalls an earlier era when making music videos was about getting a song noticed. Sleeper Agent is back in the studio and we can expect a follow up to Celebrasion (2011) sometime in the coming months.

Yes Cadets – “Seconds in a Minute”
from Le Mans (EP)
out now (Oct. 8) on Hummingbird Records
Hooky, indie pop that will tickle your ears. Just a lot of fun, and it’s in the same vein as Two Door Cinema Club and Phoenix. Love the video too, it’s really sweet and innocent. The boy in the video reminds of one my kids.

Cheers…
