James Vincent McMorrow is a busy man. In February 2010, he released his self-produced and recorded debut, Early in the Morning. It quickly garnered attention in his native Ireland, and then throughout the UK over late 2010 and early this year. Released in the U.S. on January 25, tracks from Early in the Morning popped up on American TV shows, Chuck, Grey’s Anatomy, and Parenthood. He’s toured for most of 2011, coming to the US thrice since March. This past week, he wrapped up a fall tour that brought him to the US west coast.

One of this year’s highlights for McMorrow was the Kilkenny Arts Festival. Eighteen months after releasing his debut, McMorrow returned to his homeland a superstar. Not bad for a guy who learned to play guitar at age 19. McMorrow’s set at Kilkenny included covers of Sun Kil Moon‘s Like the River, Midlake‘s Roscoe, and Chris Isaak‘s Wicked Game.

It’s dark, methodical pace breaks nicely with gentle keys and haunting, distant vocals. Fans of Best Coast and Department of Eagles will enjoy this.
