After playing the music industry game in their first band Takeover UK, Pittsburghers Nic Snyder (voice, guitar, keys) and Josh Sickels (drums) sought to record and release a backlog of songs that didn’t fit within the confines of their previous band. They picked the non-descript name, 1, 2, 3 to shepherd their efforts. Similar to Fort Lauderdale electronic band arrange, this band name provides for a difficult online search criterion, or is in other words ‘un-Googleable’. Despite the calculated attempt at obscurity, the music of 1, 2, 3 has garnered great interest in the past year.
The Chess Club EP is a double single (available on Noise Trade) that showcases the musical chops and charismatic falsetto of 1, 2, 3. The A-side tunes, ‘Going Away Party’ and ‘Little Cure’ bounce with heavy hooks and a nice mix of electronics and conventional instruments. True to tradition, the B-siders, ‘Big Beige’ and ‘Feeling Holy’ are more delicate &restrained, revealing depth and poignancy. All of the tunes on The Chess EP celebrate blue collar existence (divulging the Pittsburgh roots) and evoke the comfort of classic rock while brandishing the hallmarks of modern experimental pop composition.
