Sunday Ramblings & Considerations – 07.31.11

Today’s Edition: David Dondero and Lonnie Walker at Tipsy this week, 24 Reasons to love the Pacific Festival, considerations of interest, and VIDEOS!

David Dondero joining Lonnie Walker at the Tipsy on 8/6

Lonnie Walker (check out our previous feature on LW) is an old favorite of Greenvillean hipsters, punks, and ne’er do wells (present company included) who frequent the indie scene here, but David Dondero is a name that might escape that same group.  Dondero, once part of the punk/hardcore band Sunbrain, is now a solo act who straddles the roots rock-folk line. He is considered one of the premier songwriters in the US, and has toured extensively with the likes of Bright Eyes, Crooked Fingers, and Spoon. Dondero is also quite prolific, releasing nine albums in the last twelve years. His latest, A Pre-existing Condition currently out on Ghost Meat records.

The Pacific Festival

Saturday August 13 marks the start of the Pacific Festival, which has one of the most diverse and interesting line ups we’ve seen this year.  Plus, they’re offering a kick ass sampler with free downloads on SoundCloud.

Snoop Dogg, Cut Copy, The Black Lips, and Toro y Moi are among the 50 plus artists performing that day in Oak Canyon Ranch, CA (in the OC).If you’re in the area, consider going. If you just can’t make it, well, now you have access to twenty-four blissful tunes.

Consider these…

–Hey Indie rock fans! Kill Rock Stars, Merge, and Subpop have free sampler LPs available at Amazon. Amazon’s download software needs to be installed on your computer.

The Head and the Heart are still skyrocketing in status, and announced they’ll be headlining their first US tour later this year.  Opening for the Seattle band will be Thao Nguyen and her band the Get Down Stay Down.  That should be a tour worth following. The Head and the Heart stopped by KEXP studios this week in support of this tour.

–Former EMI CEO refers to file sharing as “try before you buy” purchasing behavior, and points to studies that suggest this is true. Read it here.  An interesting perspective, given the recent accord between ISP owners and the RIAA/MPAA.

Videos, videos, videos…

Garland Jeffreys – Coney Island Winter

Laura Marling – Sophia

Bjork – Crystalline

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart – The Body

Mountain Goats – Estate Sale Sign
