On the Radar: The Milk Carton Kids

Contemporary folk troubadours, The Milk Carton Kids, will win you over with pure talent and originality (in a genre that often gets bogged down in the banality of self-pity and nostalgia). Hailing from Eagle Rock, CA, Kenneth Pattengale and Joey Ryan employ a well-worn formula (two guitars, two voices) to render riveting tales of heartbreak and humor served up with acoustic melodies and sweet harmonies. Featured below, ‘Michigan’ displays the emotional gravitas of a Gillian Welch tune, and ‘New York’ exhibits some excellent guitar work and nice male-female vocal harmonies. The Milk Carton Kids are on tour supporting KD Lang and the Old Crow Medicine Show this summer. The albums Prologue and Retrospect are available as free downloads on their website.
