If I keep working crazy hours, I anticipate troubles of the brain. Ah, but I am talking about The Veils new EP, Troubles of the Brain, due out January 25 on Pitch Beast records. This marks their first release since Sun Gangs (2009, Rough Trade). Now on their own label with nearly the same line-up, what should we expect from The Veils? A lot based on what’s available.
Finn Andrews has the uncanny ability to explore the lower ranges of his voice, but also has a remarkable falsetto. Releases from the upcoming recording, Bloom and Iodine and Iron, support this observation. The Wishbone is one of the best new tracks I’ve heard in a while. I also had a chuckle when I heard Finn ask his father about the struggles of songwriting and life on the very catchy The Stars Come Out Once The Lights Went Out. Let’s just say his dad can relate.
So four tracks into this and Troubles of the Brain appears to be a 2011 smash for the Commonwealth-based (NZ-UK) band. The anticipation is heightening to hear the rest.
